FPD Alumni Returns for Red Chair Talks Chapel Conversation
At First Presbyterian Day School, chapel is more than a gathering. It is a space where stories of faith meet real life. This week’s chapel featured a meaningful conversation with FPD alumnus Thomas Johnson, who returned to campus as part of our Red Chair Talks chapel series.
What Are Red Chair Talks
Red Chair Talks are a signature part of FPD chapel, where a member of our chapel team leads a guided conversation with a guest speaker. These conversations invite students to listen closely, reflect deeply, and see how faith is lived out beyond the classroom.

A Foundation Built at FPD
Thomas Johnson, Class of 2021, attended FPD from third grade through graduation. Like many students in a Christ centered school environment, faith was woven into his daily rhythm through Bible classes, chapel, and relationships with teachers who consistently pointed him toward truth. It was not until college that he fully realized how formative that foundation had been. Faith was always present at FPD, Thomas shared. In college, I had to seek it out on my own, and that was harder than I expected.
The Night That Changed Everything
During his sophomore year of college, Thomas was involved in a devastating car accident that left him with severe third degree burns over nearly forty percent of his body. He spent weeks in a coma, followed by months of hospitalization, therapy, and more than thirty surgeries. Doctors were unsure he would survive. Yet when Thomas woke up, he described an overwhelming awareness of God’s presence and an unexplainable joy. As Thomas began the long process of healing, doctors and nurses noticed something unusual. Despite intense pain and uncertainty, he approached each day with gratitude, hope, and determination. "That joy was not natural, " Thomas explained.
It carried me through surgeries setbacks and recovery. Without it I do not know where I would be."
That same resolve helped him return to school and graduate on time.
Living With Purpose
Today, Thomas sees his story as something meant to be shared. He now serves as a certified peer supporter for burn patients, encouraging others who are walking through trauma and recovery. More importantly, he views his life as an opportunity to point others to Christ. "God met me in the worst moment of my life," Thomas said. "And He is still using me."

Why This Matters at FPD
At FPD, we believe education prepares students not just for college, but for life. Stories like Thomas Johnson’s remind us that the seeds planted through chapel, community, and Christ-centered teaching often bear fruit years later. Through Red Chair Talks, students are invited to see faith lived out honestly, courageously, and with purpose. We are reminded of a truth we hold close. We are proud of you and praying for you, Thomas.
